Career Coach News: How Clarity Can Change Your Job Search

If you want to get a new job, you have to know what it is you’re looking for, and why, says Seth Kaufman, psy.d, Certified Career and Life Purpose Coach with the Think Human.

Dr. Kaufman emphasizes “clarity” as an important part of any successful job search. He says you have to know “exactly what your target is.” You should ask yourself questions, such as what is the job you want, and how does it fit into your long-range career goals.

You can also contact a career coach to give you guidance on determining what type of career would be a good fit for your skills. Dr. Kaufman says if you’re looking for just a job, contact a recruiter. But if you’re looking to establish a career, call a career coach to give you that clarity on your job search.

It’s not enough to simply answer job postings, says the career coach. You also have to have a goal in mind. Dr. Kaufman says that if you don’t know what it is you’re targeting, “nothing you do will hang together in a unified plan.”

He also cautions against putting all your efforts into simply responding to online job listings, as they only represent a portion of all the employment opportunities out there. Even in the Internet age, personal and business connections – like a friend you may know at a company – are still the best way to find a job.
