Work Tip — Focus on working smart, not just working hard.

Dr. Miriam Reiss, MCC, says it’s important to figure out what the “smart” things are to do to get ahead at your company. Such a factor “is very company-specific,” says the career and life coach. Some companies might place a premium on “working crazy hours,” she said, but others might have different priorities. Figure out what is valued at your place of employment, and make sure you’re doing that. For example, some companies may value leadership, some companies look for creativity, while others may only value the bottom line. Determine what the culture is at your workplace, and act accordingly.
