How to Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

By LISA SWAN

Sure, there is something to something to be said for staying at home at night, curled up on your couch with your cat and reruns of “Murder, She Wrote.” But if you do it every day, to the exclusion of anything else, you might be in a bit of a rut. That means it’s time to get out of your comfort zone. It’s time for you to, as the cliché goes, do something that scares you. Here are some tips from life coaching experts on how to do so, in common areas where people get stuck in a rut:

If you don’t meet enough new people…

Go to an event where you don’t know anyone, and have a goal to introduce yourself to at least 10 people. This is a tough goal, especially if you are an introvert. But here are some ways to make it easier: look for an event that you have an interest in learning more about, so you have something to talk about with people. A good way to get started is to join Meetup.com and look for social groups in your area. You can also go to networking events. A helpful hint: many of the people going to these events are trying to meet new people, too, so don’t be scared.

If you need to get a fitness routine…

Start by putting one foot in front of the other, and going for regular walks. You should also start going to a gym that has a variety of machines and classes, and trying new things every week. Start with a goal of taking one class each week in something you have never tried. You can see all the many things you can do to get physically fit. And guess what – you might actually like some of the classes!

If you want to meet somebody to date…

You may meet somebody at the gym, or when you go out to meet people with Meetup.com and networking events. Or you could sign up for a dating site like Match.com or PlentyofFish.  You should also simply make it clear that you are open to meeting someone, and ask your friends if you want to go out on a blind date. Sure, these are all scary things to do, but you are going to have to get out of your comfort zone if you want to meet someone.

If you have something else in mind…

Whatever it is you’d like to do, you can get out of your comfort zone easier with some help from a life coaching expert. They can give you advice on how to try things that scare you, but will make you grow as a person. To learn more about how to hire a life coaching professional, click here.
