Recently I am seeing a rise in the number of people coming to me to look at what they really want to do with their careers. Even for people with secure jobs, it seems the recent financial crisis and economic uncertainty has gotten people thinking.
If this sounds like you, here are some suggestions to consider as you contemplate…
1) Work your network. Now is a great time to reach out to people, make contact. You will want these relationships to be strong now before you need to ask for a favor later. It is always better to not leave contact for when you need or want something.
2) Be a career investigator…go to a networking event, talk to people, see what they do. Pay attention to what people do for their career and what seems fun or right to you and consider why. Usually when something feels right it is because we think it fits with some core value or need of ours. Getting to know your core needs and values can help you identify different career ideas that may be fulfilling to you.
3) Get a real sense about other careers. Often we think about another job in romantic terms…we think about how great it would be if only, but the reality may be different for you. I suggest taking the time to talk with people who are in that career and ask them what it is like, what is their day to day, what they enjoy and what they don’t. This can give you a clearer picture of what a job is really like and how you might actually enjoy it.
4) Don’t stop at your current career/job. I always recommend to people who are considering career changes to not let up in their current jobs or careers. While is tempting, you will always be happier if you finish strong and in a way you can be proud of, not to mention that people will remember you in a more powerful way if and when you leave. And sometimes it looks like we do not like our career when we are afraid or not doing well. Doing your best at work will give you a good vantage point to see whether or not you are happy there.
